The auto care specialists at one of Madison Auto Care’s seven NAPA service centers will help you if your car starts leaking antifreeze.
When you were unloading your bike from the car after you got home from biking along the Lake Monona Loop, you noticed a sweet smell that seemed to be coming from your car. You brushed it off thinking it might be your imagination or that you smelled something a neighbor was baking.
That’s not a good assumption to make. While you might have been smelling chocolate chip cookies, it’s at least equally possible you were smelling antifreeze because your car has sprung a leak. That’s nothing to ignore. As Car & Driver points out, “If your vehicle is leaking antifreeze, the problem needs to be repaired promptly, before it causes much bigger, more costly issues.
“Despite its name, antifreeze does more than just keep your vehicle’s radiator from freezing up in winter. It’s part of your vehicle’s cooling system, which controls the engine’s temperature so that it runs properly and doesn’t overheat.”
The most obvious symptom of an antifreeze leak, aside from the sweet smell, is the appearance of a lime green, orange, pink, or blue-green puddle under your car. Another indication is a car that runs hot or overheats.
If you see or experience any of these, you need to get your car to a trusted Madison auto care and auto repair technician as soon as possible.
“The engine’s cooling system is complex and has many parts,” Car & Driver advises. “A coolant leak could be as cheap and simple to repair as tightening a loose clamp on one of the system’s several hoses—something you can do yourself. Or it can be as complicated and expensive to repair as replacing a broken water pump. A major problem like that will require the skills of a technician to diagnose it and a shop full of tools to repair it.”
