Tire Replacement, One Tire or Two? | Can I Buy One Tire?

You should buy tires in pairs or in sets of four to save money and maintain safety.

You decided to get some fresh air by visiting Middleton's Winter Window Stroll. The walk did a good job clearing your head. But you blew out a tire on the way home. Now you need to replace the tire.

When you tried to replace the tire this morning, the tire salesman wanted to sell you a set of four. You thought that was crazy. Why buy four tires to replace one?  The tire salesman then suggested you buy two tires to replace the one.

Tire experts agree that buying tires in pairs or full sets makes sense. Buying just one tire is not safe. It will cost more in the long run. It could damage your vehicle because of stress that results from unmatched tires.

"It’s usually not a good idea to replace just one car tire. Doing so can lead to uneven wear and make your car harder to steer," wowowow.com says. "For best performance and safety, it’s better to replace tires in pairs or all four at once. ... Mismatched tires can be unsafe. They can cause your car to handle poorly, especially in turns or on wet roads. This could lead to accidents."

What happens if I buy just one tire?

Wowowow.com says you can buy just one tire. But, you need to understand the downside to doing so.

The first issue you face is the tires themselves. They may be made by separate tire companies. One could be older than the other. This means your tires won't wear at the same rate. That will mean a rough ride and a hard time steering. Your car may pull to one side. Because the wear is uneven your tires will wear out faster.

The uneven wear will make it harder to steer. The mismatched tires will make braking more difficult. Fuel efficiency will also decrease.

Wowowow.com concludes that it is best to buy tires in pairs or sets. It's safer and protects your car.
