New or Will Used Do? | Madison Tires

Any one of Madison Auto Care's seven NAPA auto service centers can help you decide the best tires for your car.

We’re all trying to save money these days so when you were headed to the Farmers Market and noticed your tires were worn, you started wondering if replacing your worn tires with used, rather than new, tires would be a great way to save money.

At first glance, that might make sense – at least where the initial cost is concerned. But motorbiscuit.com points out that the decision to buy used tires instead of new is incredibly complicated and risky.

“Used tires can have plenty of tread life remaining, but what if they were cheap tires to begin with? Old, used tires may have invisible signs of wear [and] tear that can cause a tire blowout while traveling at high speeds,” motorbiscuit.com says. “According to Consumer Reports, you’re gambling with your safety when you buy used tires: The tire could have been driven overloaded, underinflated, or to excessively high speed. Any one or a combination of these factors could lead to internal damage not visible from the outside. In short, the used tire could be unsafe.”

Among the items you should consider if you’re taking the chance – mileage, amount of tread remaining on the tire, age of the rubber, presence of dry rot, possible internal defects, whether the tire has been recalled, or whether the tire has been recapped.

Whether you buy used or new, you need to consider if the tire is the best for your car and for the type of driving you plan to do.

Buying new doesn’t mean you’re going to have to go broke to afford a good set of tires. It’s more likely that, if you consult with a trusted Madison tire specialist like the certified Madison tire technicians at any pf Madison Auto Care's seven conveniently located NAPA service centers, that you can find a better deal on a brand new set that will provide thousands of miles of worry-free wear.
