It’s Cold and My Car Won’t Start | Madison Battery

Madison Auto Care's seven NAPA service centers will help if your car is hard to start on cold mornings.

As predicted, near freezing temperatures blanketed Madison last night. They weren’t much higher this morning. All you wanted to do was stay in your nice, warm bed and hibernate the winter away. Unfortunately,  you had to be at work.

Even more unfortunately, you found that your car also wanted to hibernate. It refused to start although a neighbor helped you with a jump so you could get to work.

The fact that you weren’t the only one with starting problems this morning likely doesn’t make you feel much better. Cold weather is hard on engines and it’s especially hard on batteries.

“Winter temperatures can take a toll on your car’s battery, forcing it to work overtime during cold conditions,” accuweather.com says. “A car battery gets drastically more worn from winter temperatures. At 32 degrees Fahrenheit, a car battery loses about 35 percent of its strength. At 0 F, a car battery loses about 60 percent of its strength.”

Accuweather.com adds, “Operating at reduced strength, a car’s battery is tasked with powering the car’s entire electrical system, this including vital electrical engine control systems. During the winter, the engine’s motor oil becomes thicker, thus the battery needs to supply enough power to the starter motor to turn the engine over in that thicker, heavier environment.

“A car’s engine is already daunting enough for a cold battery, although when adding up all other accessories that are being run by the car throughout the winter it’s more likely to send the battery over the edge.

“Consider the constant need to blast the heat, the increased use of headlights during shorter winter days, a greater use in windshield wipers fighting road grim and the extended use of car chargers from accelerated phone battery loss. Failure to power these things down then tasks the battery with powering them on again.”

There are steps you can take to prevent your battery from succumbing to frigid weather. Among them – keep your battery warm (park your car indoors if possible), keep your battery clean, power off all electronics when you get out of the car, and make sure you have routine maintenance performed on your battery in the fall.
