If your car starts running hot, you need to get it to an auto technician as soon as possible. The certified mechanics at any one of Madison Auto Care’s seven NAPA service centers can help you.
You were headed home from Trader Joe’s yesterday when you noticed your temperature gauge was registering hot. You made it home with no other problems, but you’re wondering why your car is running hot and what to do about it.
There are many things that could be causing your car to run hot, from something as simple as a defective radiator cap to something more complex like a broken thermostat, a leaking water pump, or blocked airflow, according to Farmers Insurance. You’re probably going to need a mechanic to figure out the reason, Farmers says.
As for what to do when your car overheats, Farmers says you should stop. That’s it. Just stop. Pull over to the side of the road and stop. Then you call a tow truck and have it towed to the trusted auto repair technician of your choice.
If for some reason your car can’t be towed, then sit there until your engine cools – at least 30 minutes. Never take the cap off a hot radiator. After that, Farmers says, check to see if you have coolant/anti-freeze and check the hoses to see if one has come loose or has a crack or hole.
You can also do several things to help prevent a problem in your cooling system. First, be sure to check the coolant – or have it checked – every time you have an oil change. If you’re low, top it off and check to see why the coolant is low. You should also regularly check the hoses to make sure they’re in good shape and don’t have cracks or breaks in them.
