Recently, the weather in Madison has given us some relief from the heat. The highs are down from the 90s that made the summer so miserable and into the 70s and 80s. In fact, because of rain expected today, the high is only supposed to reach 69. It feels downright chilly.
But just because the weather has cooled down some, drivers should not relax when it comes to making sure children (and pets) don’t get locked alone in cars.
Consumer Reports notes that, so far this year, at least 40 children have died in hot cars. According to a CR analysis, the high temperatures at the times of those deaths ranged from a low of 69 to a high of 108 degrees.
“By far, the biggest factor is parents and caregivers who unknowingly leave a child behind in a car,” CR says. “The reasons for that include everything from a disrupted routine—a very common explanation—to family members thinking someone else had brought the baby inside at the end of a trip.”
The moral is – just because it’s cooler, don’t relax your vigilance when it comes to watching out for your child (or pet).
