You were headed back from a bike ride along the Lake Monona Loop when you noticed the check engine light had come on. Like most drivers, your first reaction was a sinking, sick feeling in the pit of your stomach. Your next thought was “maybe I can just ignore it.”
You could but that would be a really bad idea.
The most likely problem is a loose gas cap that you can tighten. At the other end of the scale are potentially serious issues that could cost you your engine.
“What do you risk in ignoring the light? As there are literally dozens of reasons the light can come on in the first place, the risks are hard to determine simply by looking at the dash.,” according to driving.ca. “Leave a coolant temp sensor problem unfixed, for example, and your engine can over-fuel. If too much unburned fuel gets into the exhaust system, it can ruin a catalytic converter. Leave an engine misfire unresolved and you can also ruin a converter, but if the misfire is caused by a lean-running condition you can damage cylinder head valves and more.”
And, if the check engine light is flashing, it’s an indication you have a problem with your catalytic converter that could severely damage your engine just by driving it a few more miles.
