Do Tires Expire? Madison Auto Care Answers this Question.

Are My Tires too Old?

You were returning home from Madison's Fantasy in Lights the other night when you noticed your car's tire warning light had come on. You were a bit surprised. You're not sure when you last bought tires. But, between the Covid epidemic and other things, you're sure you haven't put that many miles on your tires. Surely it can't be time to buy a new set of tires.

But you could be wrong about that.

Tires have a "use by" date you can find on the side  wall. And, Nhtsa.gov explains that "Most of us drive our vehicles enough that the tires’ treads wear out, and we replace our tires before aging becomes an issue. However, if you own or use recreational vehicles, 15-passenger vans, collector cars, any other vehicles you don’t drive regularly, or if your annual mileage is low, you could be at risk." Why would this be? It's because the rubber in tires is subject to decay in sunlight, climate, poor storage and bad maintenance. You can tell when tires start to age, wpr.org says, by cracks forming in the sidewalls. But, you can prevent tire wear by proper care:  checking the pressure, rotating and aligning them.

You may not need to immediately change them when they reach the expiration date. But, you do want to start keeping an eye on them when that expiration date begins, wpr.org explains.

What About your spare tire?

We now understand that tires degrade over time. So, while your at it, you also need to keep attention on your spare. According to nhtsa.gov, "Spare tires on all vehicles are prone to aging because they seldom get replaced. Because of this, NHTSA recommends that if your vehicle comes equipped with a full-size spare tire, that it not be used as a replacement for worn tires. Use it only in emergencies such as replacing a flat tire."
