Now that fall is officially here, you’re planning to do a lot of things before winter sets in. The first is this weekend – you’re planning a short road trip to New Glarus for Oktoberfest. It’s kind of an annual tradition for you to welcome the change in seasons.
Because the trip is so short – only about 25 miles – many drivers don’t think of it as a real road trip and so they just hop in their car and hit the road. That’s not the wisest course, especially when it comes to your tires. And even more so if you haven’t checked your tires all summer.
“Regular inspections make your tires last longer, save you money and protect you on the road,” according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Among the NHTSA’s recommendations for tire safety:
- Have your tires checked annually for rubber breakdown, which is accelerated by sunlight and heat.
- Most vehicles should have a tire rotation done every 5,000 to 8,000 miles.
- One in four cars have at least one tire that is significantly underinflated. Be sure to check your tires regularly for other wear and tear, like cuts and abrasions.
