Cold Weather Is Hard on Your Car | Madison Auto Care

The Madison auto care pros at any of Madison Auto Care's seven NAPA service centers will help when your car is suffering from the cold.

At least one thing seems to be definite - it's going to be cold for the foreseeable future. It's also going to be snowy, icy, and rainy. Typical winter weather that makes you want to stay inside in front of a fire with a hot chocolate or something a bit stronger. When you do have to go outside, it's almost too cold to move. You just want to find a place to get warm again.

Your car also finds it hard to function in the cold weather. As cold weather, snow and ice roll in, AAA prepares for service calls to go up.

Among the most common cold weather problems are failing batteries. According to AAA, these are the signs that indicate your battery is getting ready to fail:

  • Vehicle cranks slowly when trying to start.
  • Grinding, clicking or buzzing when the ignition is turned on.
  • Vehicle has stalled.
  • Headlights dim when idling, but brighten when the driver revs the engine.
  • Battery is more than 3 years old.

"To avoid being stranded due to a battery problem, have the battery inspected at every oil change to make sure the cable connections are clean and tight, and the hold down hardware is secure," wnypapers.com says. "Once a battery reaches three years of age, have it tested annually. The test will identify if the battery has deteriorated to the point where replacement is recommended to prevent an unexpected failure."

It's not just your battery that doesn't function well in the cold. You should also make sure your windshield wipers are in good condition and able to clear snow off your windshield. And check your tires. Make sure they have enough tread and are inflated properly - cold weather can deflate tires.

If you aren't sure whether your car will make it through the remainder of winter or if your car does break down, then it's time to call a trusted Madison auto care technician at one of Madison Auto Care's seven conveniently located NAPA service centers: Clausen Auto, Handel Auto, Genin’s Auto, Capitol Tire, Odana Tire, Hansen’s Auto, or Aeschbach Auto.
